About
Amant New York Fall 2026 resident Solomon Garçon presents son, an experimental performance within his ongoing research project Set Pictures.
Initiated in 2022, Set Pictures investigates the production techniques of live media, approaching them as forms of extraction, exploring how content, bodies and space are mined through sound, light, choreography, repetition, and image capture.
The project examines mining as methodology in contemporary film and media production. By treating the set as a live environment, Garçon positions bodies as characters, disruptors or events within a mutable space. Sound, particularly sub-bass and vibrational frequencies, becomes a tool for provoking physical responses and altering behavior.
Interested in materialist readings of media, from surveillance technology to the obsolete digital devices taken up by scholars such as Jussi Parikka in A Geology of Media (2015), Garçon’s research connects the extraction of minerals from the earth to the technologies through which images are produced, captured and circulated. The camera is both a product of geological extraction and an apparatus through which bodies and environments are transformed into images. Interested in virality and the relationship between image capture and circulation, Garçon considers how the camera renders every site a potential film set, opening up spaces for experimental and expressive modes of behavior. Like underground excavations, cameras become holes through which new forms of visibility, performance, and interaction emerge.
For son, Garçon is joined by New York based sound artist and experimental vocalist Doula, whose practice spans vocal synthesis, multi-instrumental play, sound installation, and performance.
This program is part of the For Your Reference series, where our artists in residence share and discuss key references informing their ongoing research at Amant. Amant Programs are always free.
Doors for son open at 6:45 pm. RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Entry is first come, first served.
Please note that this performance includes loud music, high sound levels, flashing lights, and strobe effects, which may affect visitors with photosensitivity or sensory sensitivities.
