Job Description

Amant is an international private arts organization founded and led by Lonti Ebers. It fosters artistic experimentation and dialogue across disciplines. In the town of Chiusure, Siena it offers 3-month residencies from mid-June through mid-September focused internally on the work of the artist. There are no public programs per se at Amant Siena.

The residency is designed for artists and researchers from all disciplines to focus on their respective practices. The programming is private and revolves around the residents’ presentations and the discussions of their work with other participants. Amant strives to create an organization that both lessens obstacles and provides supports to those who wish to contribute their time and energy to its mission. We are looking for an Associate Director to plan and lead the annual residency, reporting to our Founder & CEO. You will coordinate and manage all aspects of the residency application process, the resident’s travel arrangements and day to day needs, and the relevant programming. During the 3-month course of the residency, you will live in the village of Chiusure and be provided an independent apartment. During the non-operating portion of the year, you are expected to work 1-2 days per week on average, remotely.

Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Create an annual budget and calendar for the artistic program at Amant Siena for 2020-2021 for approval by our Founder/CEO

  • Update the format of the application process

  • In consultation with Lonti Ebers, assist with recruiting program applicants from our network

  • Update the application form for the Invitation to the Siena Residency

  • Prepare a plan for the application review

  • Assist with the selection process

  • Produce and/or update the associated materials for the program including a residency handbook and the studio residency contract

  • Review submitted applications for presentation

  • Propose interdisciplinary compositions after a short list is compiled

  • Arrange interviews of final candidates by video conference

  • Review and amend Siena residency contract as needed and ensure all are signed before the arrival of the artists

  • Arrange travel for residents

  • Administer per diem stipends and all other program expenses

  • Develop a visiting artists program

  • Lead a program for visiting curators, critics and other relevant art professionals for the purpose of enriching and promoting the resident artists program

  • As part of the program, organize visits to cultural sites on a weekly basis

  • Procure materials for Amant Siena as needed

  • Ensure that residents’ day to day needs in Chiusure are met

  • Ensure compliance of residents to residency contract

  • Monitor expenses to ensure adherence to budget

  • Plan and execute relevant non-public programming during the residency period

  • In consultation with the Founder/CEO produce and edit content for Amant Siena on the website and social media

  • Oversee the move-out of residents at the end of the residency period

  • De-brief with the Founder/CEO at the end of the season and propose modifications for the following season

  • Maintain contact with residents and develop relationships with potential collaborators

  • Help Founder/CEO to supervise and delegate work to an intern

Ideal Candidates will have:

  • 3 or more years studio practice, arts managment or curatorial experience in the field of contemporary art

  • Program management experience

  • Problem solving expreience

  • Fluency in Italian and English

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment

  • Ability to research answers and solve problems independently

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Comfort with public speaking

  • Project management and leadership experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, One Drive, and Adobe

Preferred candidates will have past experience working with artists (and researchers).
